Today the world is faced with an increasing number of bold challenges such as climate change, political unrest and world health. Institutions worldwide are taking a stance to fight these problems, but how do they address their own struggles of collaborating on vast amounts of data from many different sources to build a shared repository of machine learning algorithms? We will discuss two projects that aim at addressing this problem with equally bold solutions: OS-Climate and the Enterprise Neurosystem. These open communities have united enterprises all over the globe to share data in a responsible way, while remaining compliant with their regulatory requirements, in order to allow data scientists to help combat world challenges by analyzing decentralized data. We will discuss the goals of these projects, how they aim to change the way data scientists collaborate, and why the communities turned to open source for the solution.
